Japan's retail sales fell 1.6 percent monthly in May, figures from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry showed on Thursday, missing the 1.0 percent decline expected by economists.
In April, retail sales rose 1.4 percent.
Retails sales rose an annual 2.0 percent, falling short of the 2.6 percent forecasts. That was also down from the previous month's 3.2 percent gain.
Sales from large retailers fell 0.6 percent on year versus forecasts for -0.5 percent after a1.1 percent increase a month earlier.
